Why Should I Worry About Insurance For My College Student?
The tuition arrangements are set up; the dorm room is assigned and your son or daughter is headed off to college in the fall. In all of the confusion of the paperwork, deadlines and financial arrangements, did you remember to check on their health insurance?
Do you know what your insurance policy provides as far as health insurance for college students? There are some out there that will carry your student under a family policy but others won't.
There are insurance firms which base their coverage on a student's status as either a part-time or full-time pupil. Go over your policy or consult your company's representative. If you belong to a Health Maintenance Organization, it is important to know whether your child would be covered when using the medical facility at the college.
Be sure to also verify the age limits. You may discover that your child may be dropped from the policy no matter what, once they reach a specific age.
You can ask your insurance provider to issue you an extra card that your children can carry with them. If there is a different card for prescription coverage, make sure that your children carry that one too.
This step is preventative in nature, and will help to avoid undue confusion when they suddenly have to seek medical treatment. Most universities and colleges offer some form of student health insurance that are a reasonable fiscal alternative if your policy excludes your child.
Before the kids start college this fall, look into health insurance. Making sure your child is covered in the event something goes wrong now allows both the child and the parents the luxury to only have to worry about education once school starts.
