Trading Options: Guaranteed Growth Even in Times of Decline

by David Baxwell

If you're into stock market trading but have yet to make your initial foray into the world of trading options, then you have probably been discouraged for a number of reasons. One possibility is that the obtuse language thrown about by veteran traders is intimidating. Another is that perhaps the markets seem so dauntingly complex.

No matter the reasons for your reluctance, you are selling yourself short by avoiding the possibilities to be had from trading options. You simply need to develop your education and understanding of the fundamental concepts which are critical to mastering options in order to begin trading with confidence. This is possible by taking an option tutorial.

With that said, the reason why trading options can be so lucrative is because options work in significantly different way from regular stock. As derivative investment instruments, the reward potential of options is based on changes to an underlying stock's value, rather than being measured against the overall value of the company. In effect, this means that you can make money from options even when the underlying stock's value decreases.

However, in order to fully realize the potential that can be had from options, one must develop an option trading strategy. To do this one attempts to position multiple options, usually around the same underlying stock, in order to ensure that one can profit regardless of whatever circumstances may influence the stock's value.

The simplest example which illustrates the use of an option trading strategy is called "the straddle," which involves making use of both a call option and a put option on the same underlying stock. A call option profits the trader when the underlying stock goes up above a certain price, while a put option does the opposite by rewarding the trader when there is a decrease in the value of the underlying stock.

Still, as already indicated, it would be unwise to begin trading options without a well developed stock option education. An option tutorial can help in this regard by guiding you through fundamental concepts and basic ideas that are critical to an understanding of how the potential of options can be maximized.

This article endorses trading options as a potential venture for ambitious stock market traders. It emphasizes the rewarding possibilities of options by drawing distinctions between options and stocks and dismissing the notion that options are only for trading wizards. The article points to the role an option tutorial can play in developing one's stock option education and instructing them in the use of option trading strategy.
