Trading Options: A Beginner's Approach

by David Baxwell

If you are a stock market newcomer who has not yet gone ahead to explore the great potential to be had by an exploration into trading options, then you are really missing out. All that is necessary to venture forth in this realm is a commitment towards educating yourself in the basics of options, and the discipline to master them.

The reason why trading options is so great because it allows you to speculate on something other than actual stock, something more abstract: the potential itself for stock to change in value. Simply put, one trades on the potential for stock to grow or shrink in value. This is a great boon, as the shares of most publicly traded companies are in a constant state of value flux.

Therefore, to begin taking their stock market trading to higher levels, one needs to incorporate the option strategy into one's trading habits. That means complementing your existing stock portfolio with a similarly diverse portfolio of stock options. In effect, you must add a few gambles on the directional changes to stock value in addition to existing stockholdings.

However, don't think that maximum profit begins and ends with simply buying and selling options. Oh no, to truly realize their full potential one must begin employing a well-developed option trading strategy. This requires taking a diverse number of options and positioning them against one another in order to guarantee that you see a profit regardless of what market conditions might emerge.

"The straddle" is a simple example which effectively illustrates the use of an option trading strategy. It involves taking a call option and a put option on the same underlying stock. The former makes money when the underlying stock sees an increase in value, while the latter, conversely, will see profit when the underlying stock decreases in value. In effect, the straddle allows the trader to make money regardless of the performance of the company listed by its underlying stock.

Still, before you do anything foolhardy by rushing into trading options unprepared, you must pursue your stock option education through independent research or an option tutorial. No matter how you do it, you must obtain knowledge and understanding of various concepts such as the distinctions between various market strategies and the function of a strike price.

This article introduces newcomers to stock market trading to the profit opportunities afforded to those who include an option strategy into their stock trading tactics. By trading options, one is able to gamble on the potential for value change which lies within all stocks. With that recommendation in mind, the article stresses the importance of a stock option education and the use of an option trading strategy in guaranteeing profits no matter the circumstances.
